HL Deb 19 February 1981 vol 417 cc884-5WA
Lord Avebury

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether prisoners who have been segregated for the maintenance of good order and discipline are given the opportunity to meet the member of the Board of Visitors before the latter gives authority for segregation to be extended beyond a period of a month; and if not, why not.

Lord Belstead

Members of a Board of Visitors are required to hear any complaint or request which a prisoner wishes to make to them. This includes a prisoner removed from association for the maintenance of good order or discipline. I have no doubt that a member of a board who had interviewed a prisoner but who was not considering the renewal of the authority for his removal under Rule 43 would pass on the prisoner's representations to the appropriate member.
