Lord INGEWOOD

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Approximately what proportion of the £ 2, 300, 000 cost of employing 165, 000 police officers in the Metropolitan Police Area policing demonstrations in 1979, as quoted by the Metropolitan Police Receiver at a meeting in Vienna, represents overtime pay.

1936 Lord BELSTEAD

As stated in paragraph 3 of the Green PaperReview of the Public Order Actand Related Legislation (Cmnd. 7891), published on 24th April, the total number of officers deployed on the occasion of major demonstrations in 1979 was 108, 000. The estimated gross cost was £ 5.75 million. It is not possible to say what proportion of this cost was attributable to overtime.
