HL Deb 15 January 1980 vol 404 cc88-9WA
Lord AVEBURY

asked Her Majesty's Government:

How many persons given limited leave to enter or remain in the United Kingdom as fiances or husbands since 22nd March 1977 have been recorded as having had their subsequent applications for indefinite leave to remain at the end of 12 months' marriage refused up to 30th September 1979; how many such persons were given indefinite leave to remain over the same period, and how many of those refused have lodged notices of appeal.

Lord BELSTEAD

Up to 30th September 1979, 472 refusals, not all at the end of 12 months' marriage, were recorded under the changes in the rules introduced on 22nd March 1977, but some refusals may not have been recorded. 15,757 applications were granted. The number of applicants who appealed is not separately recorded.
