HL Deb 27 March 1979 vol 399 cc1573-4WA
Baroness HORNSBY-SMITH

asked Her Majesty's Government:

How many young people have been provided with alternative employment under the Youth Opportunities Scheme through planned work experience, and how many of these places were provided by industry and the Public Services respectively.

Lord WALLACE of COSLANY

I am informed by the Manpower Services Commission that between 1st April 1978 when the programme started and the end of February 1979 a total of 130,500 young people had joined the Youth Opportunities Programme. Of these approximately 99,000 entered schemes providing planned work experience. Just under three-quarters of these opportunities were in the private sector and about a fifth were in the public sector.
