HL Deb 15 March 1979 vol 399 cc854-5WA
Lord CHELWOOD

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether they will list the discriminatory legislation that has now been repealed or amended by the provisional Government in Rhodesia, and in what ways, if any, Rhodesian law in this respect now fails to conform with British requirements before recognising an elected Rhodesian Government.

Lord GORONWY-ROBERTS

Legislation to end racial discrimination in Rhodesia was passed in early February. We recognise this as an advance. However, the constitution on which the forthcoming elections are to be fought contains racially based provisions. The test of any settlement remains whether it is acceptable to the people of Rhodesia as a whole.
