HC Deb 11 June 1979 vol 968 cc99-100W
Mr. Alton

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services if he will make a further statement on Rampton hospital.

Dr. Vaughan

I hope to do so shortly.

Mr. Charles Irving

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services if he will set up an inquiry into the allegations made in the independent television programme about Rampton hospital; and if he will report the findings of the inquiry to the House.

Dr. Vaughan

I regret I am not yet able to add to the reply my right hon. Friend gave to the hon. Member for Wolverhampton, North-East (Mrs. Short) on 23 May.—[Vol. 967, c. 123–5.]

Mr. Ashton

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services whether he will list the number of complaints made at Rampton hospital against nurses in the past five years; and how many of these have resulted in disciplinary action.

Dr. Vaughan

During the five years 1974 to 1978 inclusive, 57 complaints have been made against Rampton hospital nurses by or on behalf of patients, of these 32 alleged physical ill-treatment. None has resulted in disciplinary action being taken.

Mr. Ashton

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services whether he will list the number of attacks made on staff, both male and female, by patients at Rampton hospital in each of the past five years; how many of these attacks needed medical attention; and how many resulted in staff having to lose time from work.

Dr. Vaughan
