Mr. Latham

asked the Secretary of State for Employment what is the total number of staff in his Department; and what is the current cost to public funds, including salaries, pensions and overheads, of running it.

At 1 April 1979 the total number of staff in post in the Department of Employment group, including casual staff, was 55,344.

The total cost of the group to public funds in the current financial year is estimated to be £1,098 million, of which £399 million is attributable to salaries, pensions and overheads.
