HC Deb 05 February 1979 vol 962 c76W
Mr. Wm. Ross

asked the Secretary of State for Defence on how many occasions in each month during the past 12 months the part-time element of the Ulster Defence Regiment has carried out duties on the West Bank of the River Foyle within the built-up area of Londonderry; and on how many occasions in the same months the full-time element of the Ulster Defence Regiment has been so used; and, of the occasions when each element was so used, how often the duty concerned was at the request of the Royal Ulster Constabulary.

Mr. Robert C. Brown

Front line support to the Royal Ulster Constabulary in the built-up area west of the River Foyle is provided by the regular Army. Full-time and part-time units from 5 UDR have been deployed there from time to time, but it would require disproportionate effort to establish every occasion on which this has happened. All Army operations in the area are in support of the RUC.
