HL Deb 04 April 1979 vol 399 cc1963-4WA
Lord BROCKWAY

asked Her Majesty's Government:

What is the estimated population in the United Kingdom of people born in the New Commonwealth and Pakistan (by number and percentage of total population).

Lord WELLS-PESTELL

According to the 1971 Census the population resident in Great Britain and born in the New Commonweatlh and Pakistan (NCWP) was 1,151,000 or 2.1 per cent. of the total population of Great Britain. Corresponding information is not readily available for the United Kingdom. These figures include both persons of NCWP ethnic origin and persons of British descent. More up to date estimates have been made of the population of NCWP ethnic origin resident in Great Britain who had been born in the NCWP (that is, excluding the group of British descent). Such people are estimated to have num- bered 1,030,000 at mid-1976 or 1.9 per cent. of the total population of Great Britain, as compared with 880,000 or 1.6 per cent., at the time of the 1971 Census.
