HL Deb 13 April 1978 vol 390 c866WA
Lord AVEBURY

asked Her Majesty's Government:

What was the number of recommendations for deportation made by the courts in England and Wales in 1977; how many of these recommendations related to offenders who received custodial sentences; and how many of those offenders who received custodial sentences and were recommended for deportation were imprisoned because they could not pay a fine.

Lord HARRIS of GREENWICH

The number of recommendations made by the courts in the United Kingdom in 1977 was 1135. In 351 of these cases the offenders also received custodial sentences. I regret that information about the number of these people who were imprisoned because they were unable to pay a fine is not readily available.
