§ Mr. JohnOn 31st May 1977 there were 3,452 persons awaiting trial in prisons and remand centres in England and Wales, and 1,768 persons who had been convicted and were awaiting sentence. The longest period to that date that any of these persons had been held on remand in custody was 491 days.
