asked the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland, of the 41 IRA officers arrested and charged in 1976 and subsequently convicted, how many were given life sentences and, of the rest, what was the average length of the sentences imposed.

Of the 41 convicted, five received life sentences. The average length of the sentences of imprisonment imposed in respect of the remainder was six years.
