HL Deb 21 July 1977 vol 386 cc607-8WA
Lord AVEBURY

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether they will publish a list of the Dependencies, Protectorates, Associated States and condominiums which are related to the United Kingdom, giving in each case the number of inhabitants who are citizens of the United Kingdom and Colonies, British Protected Persons, British subjects without citizenship, and those who enjoy any other status.

Baroness LLEWELYN-DAVIES of HASTOE

No such breakdown of populations by nationality exists. It could not be produced without disproportionate expense. However, in the Dependencies and Associated States the great majority are citizens of the United Kingdom and Colonies. In Hong Kong there are about 2.6 million citizens of the United Kingdom and Colonies. The great majority of the population of the Solomon Islands are British Protected Persons. In the Anglo-French condominium of the New Hebrides the majority of the population are New Hebrideans but there are also about 2,000 Commonwealth citizens and 4,000 French. The list of dependencies and their approximate total populations is as follows:—
