HL Deb 08 December 1977 vol 387 cc1845-6WA
Baroness ELLES

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether they can now state how many holders of United Kingdom and Colonies passports, over the age of 18, are resident in each of the eight other Member States of the European Community.

Lord GORONWY-ROBERTS

According to information compiled by our embassies, the number of citizens of the United Kingdom and Colonies resident in EEC countries is estimated at approximately 286,000. No precise figures are available for either the total or for those citizens aged 18 or over but, on the basis of the statistical composition of the population of England and Wales, that age group are likely to comprise 75 per cent. (214,000) of the total.

The estimated distribution by countries is:—

Total 75%
Belgium 25,000 18,500
Denmark 5,000 3,750
France 35,000 26,250
Ireland 100,000 75,000
Italy 34,000 25,500
Luxembourg 1,800 1,350
Netherlands 22,000 16,500
West Germany 63,000 47,000
285,800 213,850

House adjourned at nine minutes before eight o'clock.
