HL Deb 29 July 1976 vol 373 cc1617-8WA
Lord VAIZEY

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether members of the Arts Council, the Science Research Council and the Social Science Research Council are paid sessional allowances, expenses, et cetera (or the equivalent) and, if there is a difference in the practice of the three bodies, why.

Lord DONALDSON of KINGSBridge

The Chairmen of the Science Research Council and the Social Science Research Council are salaried and so may not claim for expenses incurred in attending meetings at their Council Headquarters. With these exceptions, all members of the Arts Council, the Science Research Council and the Social Science Research Council may claim for out of pocket expenses for attending meetings of their Councils. The Charter of the Arts Council provides that no payment may be made to any member by way of remuneration, but permits reimbursement of expenses.
