Mr. Gow

asked the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland what is his estimate of the cost of introducing identity cards for all residents of Northern Ireland; and how many representations he has receive that that step would be helpful in combating terrorism.

Mr. Merlyn Rees,

pursuant to his reply [Official Report, 1st July 1976; Vol. 914, c. 257], gave the following information:

This suggestion has been made on many occasions. It has been fully examined. I have been strongly advised against their introduction and therefore no estimate of cost has been made.
