§ Mr. OakesPreliminary indications, from surveys of the employment of newly qualified teachers being carried out on behalf of the National Association of Teachers in Further and Higher Education and by the Universities Council for the Education of Teachers, suggest that between 8,000 and 9,000 were seeking teaching jobs in England and Wales in October. About 260 of the 5,000 qualifying from University Departments of Education were in this category.
