§ Mr. Pardoeasked the Prime Minister if he will define the responsibilities of the Secretary of State for Education and Science so far as concerns the cost effectiveness of expenditure on education.
§ The Prime MinisterThe Secretary of State has a general duty under the Education Act 1944 to secure the effective execution by local authorities of the national policy for providing a varied and comprehensive education service. The nature, scale and effectiveness of expenditure on education are of course central to her responsibilities.
