expenditure of comparable descriptions derived from published Summarised Accounts is provided for the financial years 1970–71 to 1973–74. The statement shows expenditure in these categories together with the total per head of population for each of the English regions administered by the former Regional Hospital Boards, for the Scottish Regional Hospital Boards and for Wales. Expenditure by Boards of Governors of teaching hospitals in England is given separately because their catchment areas are extensive and the populations cannot be matched to regions. The Scottish and Welsh figures include expenditure of teaching hospitals which were not separately administered as were those in England. Expenditure on general medical services provided by family practitioners, and on community health services provided by Local Health Authorities up to 31st March 1974, cannot be provided by hospital regions and is expressed on a national per capita basis.
