HL Deb 04 February 1975 vol 356 c858WA
The Earl of CLANCARTY

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether they will take steps to enable Irish coins to be used in this country, in view of the fact that the coins are the same size and that English coins are widely used in the Republic of Ireland.

Lord JACQUES

Coins of both the Irish Republic and the United Kingdom circulate freely throughout Ireland, a practice stemming from historical circumstances and the convenience of countries having a common land frontier. The same considerations do not apply in Great Britain, where the use of the Republic's coins would pose serious practical difficulties.
