HC Deb 21 May 1974 vol 874 cc130-1W
Mr. Bishop

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment if he is satisfied that the requirements of the Chronically Sick and Disabled Persons Act 1970 relating to the provision of facilities for wheelchairs in public buildings are not being restricted by fire and safety regulations; and if he will inquire into these aspects.

Mr. Freeson

It is not always easy to reconcile the need to maintain public safety with the requirements of the Chronically Sick and Disabled Persons Act 1970 relating to access for the disabled. Means of achieving this aim are constantly being sought, but where such reconciliation is not possible the safety of the public must prevail. If my hon. Friend has any particular problem in mind, perhaps he will write to me.
