asked the Secretary of State for Prices and Consumer Protection if she will now announce further details of the cheese subsidy scheme.

The scheme which I announced in my reply to the hon. Member's Question on 29th April will cover cheeses of the varieties listed below. Subject to parliamentary approval, the subsidy will be paid to United Kingdom manufacturers and importers of eligible cheeses at a rate of £105 per ton. The cost of this subsidy in the current financial year is estimated at £30 million, and in a full year at £33 million. The scheme will he administered on my behalf by the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food.

The eligible cheeses are: Cheddar, Dunlop, Cheshire, Caerphilly, Lancashire, Wensleydale, Leicester, Double Gloucester, Derby, White Stilton, Gouda, Edam, Elbo, Danbo, Havarti, Samsoe, Maribo, Tybo, St. Paulin.
