HC Deb 03 May 1974 vol 872 cc282-3W
Sir J. Langford-Holt

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services how much was paid in social security benefits to workers in the mining industry in the months of January and February 1974; and how this compared with the same period in 1973.

Mr. Robert C. Brown

If the hon. Member is referring to the amount of supplementary benefit paid in January and February 1974 for the requirements of strikers' families during the mine workers' dispute—which began on 10th February—the total was approximately £2.2 million. The comparable figure for all trade disputes occurring in January and February 1973 was £110,000.
