HL Deb 20 March 1974 vol 350 c364WA
LORD AVEBURY

asked Her Majesty's Government:

What was the number of appeals heard by each of the immigration appeals adjudicators in the calendar year 1973 for which there was an oral hearing; and in the case of each adjudicator what was the number of successful appeals for the same period.

LORD SHEPHERD

The records maintained by the immigration appellate authorities do not enable cases dealt with by particular adjudicators to be identified, and do not distinguish between cases which have been heard and those disposed of without a hearing. Of 4,403 appeals which were determined by adjudicators in 1973, 751 were allowed.

The purpose of the appeal machinery is to achieve the right decision. Each case depends on its own facts and it would be improper to draw any inference from the number of successful appeals from individual adjudicators.
