HC Deb 18 March 1974 vol 870 c45W
Mr. Skeet

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what Exchequer subsidy would be required to prevent (a) the price of the standard loaf of bread rising by 1p, (b) the cost of beef from rising 3p per pound, and (c) the price of refined sugar rising by 1p per pound.

Mrs. Shirley Williams

I have been asked to reply.

Assuming that such subsidies were fully cost effective, it is estimated that it would cost about £26 million a year to prevent the price of the standard loaf rising by 1p, £41 million a year to prevent the price of carcase beef and veal from rising by 3p a pound and £24 million a year to prevent the price of refined sugar sold in shops from rising by 1p per pound.
