asked Her Majesty's Government:

1. How much has been spent so far on alterations and modifications of Bilsborrow Hall to make it into judges' lodgings.

2. Whether, as part of the Government's review of public expenditure, announced by the Prime Minister at the Lancaster House Press conference, they have decided to postpone alterations to Bilsborrow Hall.

3. Whether tenders have been sought for alterations to judges' lodgings in Salford and at Bilsborrow Hall respectively, and if they will publish a comparison of the amount of any such tenders with the budget figures.

THE PARLIAMENTARY UNDER-SECRETARY OF STATE, DEPARTMENT OF THE ENVIRONMENT (BARONESS YOUNG)

1. No money has been spent so far on alterations and modifications of Bilsborrow Hall to make it into judges' lodgings.

2. The question of whether the alterations to Bilsborrow Hall should be postponed as part of the review of public expenditure is at present under consideration.

3. Tenders have been invited for the alterations to Bilsborow Hall and are now being examined. It will not be possible to give a comparison with the budget figures until the contract has been let. Tenders have not yet been invited for the alterations to the judges' lodgings in Salford.
