§ Mr. David Steelasked the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he will publish in the OFFICIAL REPORT the gains accruing to surtax payers of the £40 increase in child tax allowances announced in his 1971 Budget from the date the increased allowances became payable until 31st March 1973.
§ Mr. NottThe increase in child allowance cost the Revenue in 1971–72 £163 million of which £2 million was attributable to surtax payers. This increase led to surtax payers paying £3 million less in 1972–73 than had the 1971 increase not taken place.
