HC Deb 24 May 1972 vol 837 c411W
Mr. David Stoddart

asked the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland what instructions the Army and Royal Ulster Constabulary have, respectively, to assist people besieged by rioting crowds in their houses.

Mr. Channon

No specific instructions have been issued. But it is the function of the security forces to preserve the peace and to protect life and property and, in pursuance of this, they will do everything they can if people are besieged in their houses.
