HL Deb 28 October 1971 vol 324 cc957-8WA
LORD SWANSEA

asked Her Majesty's Government:

  1. 1. Whether they are now in a position to give a firm date for the opening of the sections of the M.4 Motorway at present under construction; and
  2. 2. What progress is being made with plans for the extension of the M.4 westward from Newport.

THE PARLIAMENTARY UNDERSECRETARY OF STATE, DEPARTMENT OF THE ENVIRONMENT (LORD SANDFORD)

A further length of twelve miles between Stanton St. Quintin (near Chippenham) and Lydiard Tregoze (near Wotten Bassett) will be opened on November 9, completing the whole route between Newport and Liddington. Every effort is being made by the contractors to complete the remaining leangth from Liddington to Maidenhead by the end of the year, but a precise date cannot yet be given.

The motorway is to be extended westwards from Newport to Porttardulasis (near Llanelli). One section, the Port Talbot by-pass, is already in use and another, the Morriston by-pass is under construction. Schemes are being prepared for all the remaining sections with the exception of a short length between the Port Talbot and Morriston by-passes, which is the subject of a feasibility study.
