HL Deb 12 October 1971 vol 324 cc414-5WA
LORD BARNBY

asked her Majesty's Government:

What in the last statistics announced for unemployed persons in the United Kingdom, were the numbers of—

  1. (a) Males.
  2. (b) Females.

(c) Non-whites—

  1. (i) in Yorkshire
  2. (ii) in the Midland area.

LORD DRUMALBYN

At September 13, 1971, the total numbers registered as unemployed in Yorkshire were 77,993 males and 14,530 females. Similar figures for the East and West Midland Regions were 153,118 males and 21,972 females. Wholly unemployed coloured workers, included in the above, numbered 2,017 males and 199 females in Yorkshire and 4,856 males and 1,287 females in the East and West Midland Regions. The total unemployed in the Midlands was inflated by an abnormally large number of workers temporarily stopped, partly because of industrial disputes, in the West Midlands. Of the 129,000 workers registered as unemployed in this region,52,000 were temporarily stopped and the wholly unemployed rate for the region was 3.3 per cent. (G. B. 3.5 per cent.).
