HC Deb 16 November 1970 vol 806 c345W
Mr. McNamara

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many young people aged 12 years, 11 years or 10 years or under have been committed to care by the Hull Juvenile Court to approved schools as in need of care, protection or control; and what are the figures for the country as a whole.

Mr. Carlisle

Under Sections 62 and 63 of the Children and Young Persons Act 1933 courts have power to commit a child to an approved school on the ground that he is in need of care, protection or control. During 1970 one child aged 10 and one under 10 have been so committed by the Hull Juvenile Court. The latest available figures for the country as a whole are those for 1969. In that year there were no committals by Hull Juvenile Court; figures from all other courts in England and Wales were 13 children aged 12, two aged 11, five aged 10 and one under 10.
