HC Deb 10 November 1970 vol 806 c99W
95. Mrs. Renée Short

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment how many local authorities have already stopped building houses and flats or will have stopped building by 1974.

Mr. Amery

On 30th September, 1970, 454 local housing authorities in England and Wales had no dwellings under construction. However, 97 authorities without dwellings under construction had unstarted dwellings in accepted tenders.

I am unable to say how many will not be building in 1974. This depends on decisions which will be taken by nearly 1,400 authorities about the housing needs in their areas.

96. Mrs. Renée Short

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment what proposals he now has to stimulate local authority house building.

Mr. Channon

I would refer the hon. Member to the statement my right hon. Friend made in the House on 3rd November, in which he announced the Government's intention to give special assistance to local authorities with problems of slum clearance, overcrowding and obsolescence.
