HC Deb 27 January 1970 vol 794 cc292-3W
42. Mr. William Price

asked the Minister of Transport what estimate he has made of the number of lives saved by the breathalyser since its introduction.

Mr. Mulley

Since the Road Safety Act, 1967, came into force, the number of road deaths has fallen on average by about 1,000 a year. The particularly heavy reduction in accidents between 10 p.m. and 4 a.m. indicates that the drink and drive legislation played the greater part.

Mr. Peter Archer

asked the Minister of Transport what action he proposes to take in relation to the memorandum submitted to him by the Law Society relating to breath testing.

Mr. Mulley

I would refer my hon. Friend to the answer I gave to the hon. Member for Worcestershire, South (Sir G. Nabarro) and my hon. Friend the Member for Ealing, North (Mr. Molloy) earlier today.
