HC Deb 19 January 1970 vol 794 cc64-5W
Mr. Lubbock

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer how many people are currently employed by the Royal Mint at Tower Hill.

Mr. Roy Jenkins

On 1st January, 1970, a total of 1,347 were employed by the Royal Mint at Tower Hill.

Mr. Lubbock

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer when it is intended to close the Royal Mint at Tower Hill; what alternative employment will be offered to the workers concerned; and whether any such offers will be in positions of the same grade as the employees now occupy.

Mr. Roy Jenkins

Plans to build a new Royal Mint in Wales and to close the Mint at Tower Hill by 1973 were announced by the Government on 25th April, 1967. Every effort will be made to find employment in their existing substantive grades for established staff who have not reached retiring age and for temporary staff who were in post on 25th April, 1967.
