Mr. Hooley

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science if he will state the total number of overseas students studying in United Kingdom universities in each academic year 1964–65, 1965–66, 1967–68, and the estimate for 1968–69, showing separately the corresponding numbers of Commonwealth students within the totals.

Mrs. Shirley Williams

The numbers of Commonwealth and foreign full-time students at United Kingdom universities from the academic year 1964–65 onwards are as follows:

overseas students admitted to undergraduate-level courses increased from under 2,100 in 1967 to over 2,500 in 1968. The percentage of overseas candidates who were accepted, of those applying through the Council, rose from 23.6 per cent. to 25.9 per cent.
