HC Deb 12 June 1969 vol 784 cc280-1W
46. Mr. Macdonald

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science in view of the fact that while colleges of education are expanding their output of science and mathematics specialists is falling, what action he is taking to reverse this trend.

Mrs. Shirley Williams

The intake of graduate scientists to colleges and university departments of education increased this year by 23 per cent. over last year's figure. At my request all the colleges have been considering ways of improving recruitment and devising new courses and I shall be discussing their suggestions shortly with the Institutes of Education. Colleges of Education have also been asked to give priority to candidates who have qualified and wish to study science and mathematics main courses.
