asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether they will state the actual strength of the Police Service in England and Wales and in the Metropolis at the end of 1968; and give the numbers recruited into the Service during 1968 and the wastage from the Service in the same year.

LORD STONHAM

The strength of provincial police forces on 31st December, 1968, was 70,306; that of the Metropolitan Police 20,476. Total recruitment into the Service during 1968 was 5,480 men and 634 women; total wastage was 5,273 and 702 respectively.
