asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science if he will make a statement on the decline of production engineers gaining first degrees.

The number of production engineers qualifying by means of a first degree rose from 89 in 1966 to 138 in 1967. Production engineering degrees were not listed separately from general engineering degrees before 1966. Therefore, detailed information is not available for 1965 but recent figures suggest that 80 is a better estimate for that year than 115 as shown in table 20 ofStatistics of Science and Technology, 1968.
