asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department whether he has now replied to the letter sent to him on 12th November by Mr. Anthony Smythe, Secretary of the National Council for Civil Liberities, about events in Northern Ireland; and what was the substance of his reply.

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department (1) whether, in view of the provision of Section 41(1)(3) of the Government of Ireland Act, 1920, which prohibits the legislature of Northern Ireland from dealing with militiary matters and from establishing military forces, he will forthwith dispense with the services of persons other than British Army personnel and will secure the immediate disbandment of all such military forces as have been established by the Northern Ireland Government acting outside the limitations imposed by this Parliament;

(2) by what statutory authority are persons other than British Army personnel empowered to perform military functions in the Northern Ireland area.

No one, other than Service personnel, is performing military functions in Northern Ireland, and no military matters within the meaning of Section 4(1)(3) of the Government of Ireland Act, 1920 are dealt with by the Northern Ireland Government.
