HC Deb 12 December 1969 vol 793 c197W
Mr. Lubbock

asked the Minister of Housing and Local Government how many owner-occupiers were borrowing to finance house purchase from building societies, local authorities and other sources, respectively, as at a convenient date near the end of the financial year 1968–69; and what was the total number of owner-occupiers at that date.

Mr. Freeson

The number of owner-occupiers in Great Britain at December 1968 is estimated at 8.5 million, of whom an estimated 4.8 million were financing the purchase of their houses through borrowing. About 3.3 million were buying their houses through building societies; the number buying their houses with loans from local authorities is not known.
