HC Deb 24 April 1969 vol 782 c102W
12. Mr. Awdry

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what percentage of young workers under the age of 18 years were receiving part-time further education in 1968 and in each of the preceding four years.

Mrs. Shirley Williams

In 1967–68, 260,000 young workers under 18 representing 22.5 per cent. of the total, were released by their employers for part-time day or block release courses. Corresponding percentages for the preceding four years, beginning 1963–64, were 18.4, 19, 19.9 and 22.1. These percentages do not include students on evening-only courses. In addition, over 600,000 young people over compulsory school age were still at school in January, 1968.
