HC Deb 17 April 1969 vol 781 c279W
29. Mrs. Ewing

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science if he will introduce legislation to provide that universities shall not discriminate against female applicants on the ground of sex.

Mrs. Shirley Williams

I see no need for legislation. Most university charters specify that courses are open to both men and women. While 29.2 per cent. of all candidates for admission through the U.C.C.A. scheme last October were women, they composed 30 per cent. of all those accepted.
