HC Deb 02 March 1967 vol 742 c131W
39. Dame Irene Ward

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what is the average annual cost per child of primary education and secondary education in the region of the Northern Economic Planning Council and in other regions in the country, respectively.

Mrs. Shirley Williams

In 1965–66 the average cost per primary pupil in maintained schools in the Northern region was about £70. This compared with about £72 for England and Wales as a whole outside the London area, where teachers are paid a special allowance and other costs tend to be higher. The corresponding figures for secondary pupils were about £132 and £135.
