asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether they can give for the past five years the percentage of the total National Budget spent upon—

  1. (a) Social Services;
  2. (b) The Armed Forces.

LORD SHEPHERD

The following figures show expenditure by the Central Government on military defence, and by the Central Government and local authorities on social services, as percentages of total public expenditure:—

Notes:

The figures cover both current and capital expenditure. Military defence and social services are as defined in Table 53 of the Blue Book, National Income and Expenditure, 1966.

Public expenditure is as defined in Table 52 of that publication, i.e. it includes the current and capital expenditure of Central Government and local authorities and the capital expenditure of public corporations.
