HC Deb 31 January 1967 vol 740 cc75-6W
Mr. Elystan Morgan

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what advice he has received from the Cardiganshire Local Education Authority on the subject of the major school building programme for the county; and if he will give favourable consideration to including the cost of the proposed new comprehensive school at Aberystwyth in the earliest possible building programme.

Mrs. Shirley Williams

The Cardiganshire local education authority submitted the following projects for inclusion in the major school building programme for 1968–69:

  1. 1. New secondary school at Aberystwyth to replace the Ardwyn Grammar School. (Estimated gross cost £415,860).
  2. 2. New Llandysul County Primary School. (Estimated gross cost £41,160).
  3. 3. New Cwmpadarn County Primary School. (Estimated gross cost £31,150).

The Ardwyn Grammar School replacement would take the form of an extension of the existing Dinas Secondary School so as to provide a comprehensive school for the Aberystwyth area. There is little that I can add to the reply to my hon. Friend of 2nd December, 1966. Very careful consideration is being given to the selection of projects for inclusion in this programme, bearing in mind the basic needs of many areas and the relatively small allocation available for replacement projects.
