HC Deb 14 December 1967 vol 756 c210W
Mr. Hornby

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what is the current expenditure per student in universities, exclusive of student awards, in the quinquennium 1967–68 to 1971–72, and the corresponding figure for the previous quinquennium.

Mrs. Shirley Williams:

It is estimated that in the academic year 1971–72 total recurrent expenditure by universities (other than expenditure on research contracts and other self-balancing items and local authority rates) will be about £206 million, with student numbers between 220,000 and 225,000. On this basis the average expenditure per full time student will he about £925. The comparable figure for the academic year 1966–67 is £835. An average figure for the 1962–67 quinquennium would be misleading because of price and salary changes during the period.
