HC Deb 04 December 1967 vol 755 c226W
Mr. Elystan Morgan

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science in which part of the United Kingdom is the highest concentration of strontium 90 found.

Mrs. Shirley Williams

Wales, followed by the other high rainfall areas, Scotland and Northern Ireland. Measurements continue, however, to show general and substantial decreases in average levels everywhere.

Mr. Elystan Morgan

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what is the current estimated level of strontium 90 in Mid- and North Wales; and how the present level compares with the level in 1958.

Mrs. Shirley Williams

No separate measurements are now made for these areas. In Wales as a whole the ratio of strontium 90 to calcium in milk (which has been shown to be an adequate guide to the contamination of the food intake of all age groups) was 12 picocuries per gram for the third quarter of 1967 compared with 15 picocuries at the corresponding time in 1958, and with the peak of 53 picocuries reached in 1963.
