HC Deb 04 June 1964 vol 695 c197W
Mr. Lubbock

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science if he will state the rate of dental caries among five-year-old schoolchildren for each of the local education authorities included in the sample survey last autumn; and what statistical inferences he draws from these figures on the effectiveness of natural and artificial fluoridation of water supplies as a means of inhibiting decay.

Mr. Hogg

The following is the answer:

per cent.
Manchester 82.6
Middlesex 75.9
Northumberland 86.4
Nottinghamshire 74.6
Somerset 80.8
Yorkshire, West Riding 84.5
East Sussex 70.7

I draw no statistical inferences on fluoridation from these figures because in none of these areas does the public water supply contain a significant amount of fluoride.
