HC Deb 11 February 1958 vol 582 c29W
64. Mr. E. L. Mallalieu

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies what replies were given to the Nigerian Parliamentary delegation, which has recently visited Fernando Po, in answer to the accusations against the Spanish authorities of maltreatment made by more than 300 Nigerians who have returned from Fernando Po to Nigeria; and what steps the British Consulate is taking to investigate the matter.

Mr. Profumo

I understand that complaints against employers were made, not by 300 but by about two dozen Nigerian repatriated labourers. The Governor-General of the Spanish territories in the Gulf of Guinea assured the delegation that vigorous action to improve matters would be taken in all substantiated cases. Under the agreed arrangements all specific complaints by Nigerian workers are investigated in collaboration with the Spanish authorities by Her Majesty's Vice-Consul at Fernando Po and a Nigerian Labour Officer appointed for the purpose.
