Mr. J. Johnson

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies what amount of money has been voted by the Government of Mauritius towards the foundation of the Mauritius Students Unit; what is to be the staff; and what services it will give to students in the United Kingdom.

Mr. Profumo

The Government of Mauritius has voted£4,725 towards the setting up of the Mauritius Students Unit. The staff consists of the supervisor, one welfare officer and three clerical assistants.

The main duties of the Unit are:—

  1. (a) to place students at polytechnics, technical colleges and similar institutions and to arrange all forms of technical training, ad hoc attachments, and nursing training;
  2. (b) to supervise generally the academic progress of the students;
  3. (c) to attend to the welfare of the students and to administer the Mauritius allocation of the Students' Amenities Fund;
  4. (d) to organise social activities;
  5. (e) to pay allowances to Mauritius Government scholarship holders and arrange their return passages.
